SUMMER STEELHEAD: Season starts June 1st. I fish a variety of places, from the Kalama River to
The Dalles Dam. My speciality is drift boat trips down the Klickitat River. I have fished the Klickitat
River since the late 70's. This is where my guiding career all started.
Summer steelhead average 6 to 12 pounds. Although, we catch numerous fish above that
average. We have taken a few fish over 20 pounds, and the biggest was 22 pounds! Our
summer Steelhead season lasts until the end of November, fishing mainly the Klickitat by drift boat
from June through November. Historically, the fishing on the Klickitat is consistent until the day it
closes. The best time to fish the Klickitat with gear and or bait is June through November. The
best time to fly fish the Klickitat (although not limited to) is October and November!
WINTER STEELHEAD: Mid December until the end of March. Most of our winter steelheading is
done on the Kalama River. This is a dandy little stream that produces some healthy "BIG" winter
fish. It is not uncommon for a dozen or more 20+ pound steelhead to be caught on the Kalama
River by anglers who put their time in.
Early in the season hatchery fish are common. As March rolls around, the "BIG BOYS" start to
show up. Using light tackle, these fish are a hoot to hook and a challenge to land. Last year our
biggest Winter steelhead was 18 1/2 pounds and was caught on 8 pound test!
All of our trips on the Kalama are done by drift boat, using various techniques. Side drifting,
bobber and jigs, and fly fishing are our favorite techniques which consistently produce winter
steelhead.
