SPRING CHINOOK: In the Pacific Northwest, we are blessed with salmon fishing nearly year around. Our Spring
Chinook, rich in flavor and highly prized by sports fisherman, are considered the best tasting of all Chinook. Our
average size "Springer" is 12 to 25 pounds, with a few weighing in the 30 pound class.
Using various techniques and fishing a variety of places ensure you the best chance at catching these prized fish. At
times they are difficult to catch. On the other hand, when you can find them schooled up, the fishing can be fast and
furious. And that's no joke! Our Spring Chinook run starts late February. The best time to fish for them is March
through early June. May is the peak month.
We fish for Spring Chinook on the Columbia River, Kalama River, Klickitat River, Wind River and Drano Lake (Little
White Salmon River). I try to fish where the fishing is best at the time.
FALL CHINOOK: Fall Chinook are the biggest of our two major runs of Chinook. Some reach 40 pounds, like the
one pictured at right with my son.
The Fall Chinook average size is 18 to 30 pounds, with a few to 40 pounds. These are hard fighting fish. My favorite
technique (hovering baits over a school) is irresistible to them. They can't stand it. Using specifically designed rods
for just this technique helps your odds. Not to mention, the rods are light in action. Strong butt sections and a
super soft tip make it possible to detect even the softest bites.
Fall Chinook season starts mid August and lasts through mid October. September and early October are the peak
times. These fall dates book pretty fast. So a word of advice...if you are interested in fishing in the fall for Chinook,
don't wait too long to contact me for a date/dates. We fish for Fall Chinook on the Columbia River, Klickitat River,
White Salmon River, Klickitat River, Drano Lake, Wind River, and more...
